Welcome to our fifth year of book club – a milestone I could never have imagined when we began this journey! Your enthusiasm and commitment have transformed our unlikely group into a thriving community of book enthusiasts. As someone deeply passionate about literature, this book club has become more than just a hobby; it's a significant part of my life.

Reflecting on these five incredible years, I'm astounded by our growth and the depth of our discussions. Books, in their unique way, invite us into worlds unknown and familiar, challenging us to grow in empathy and understanding. Each page turned is a step into another's life, offering insights that enrich our own perspectives.

As we embark on this fifth year, I'm filled with gratitude and excitement. Our journey has been unexpected and rewarding, proving that the love of reading knows no bounds. Whether you've been with us since the beginning or are just joining, your presence is a valued part of our collective adventure in literature.

Here's to another year of shared stories, new discoveries, and the unbreakable bond that books create among us. Join us, whether for a month, several, or the entire year, and be part of our ever-evolving story.

We meet every Saturday evening from 7 to 8 pm pacific time (10 to 11 et). Our meetings are casual. We talk with each other about our weekends, our plans. We discuss the book we’re reading that month. We sometimes play games at the end of the meeting if time allows.

There’s no judgment among the group or expectations to come to the meetings with scholarly insight on the reading material. The goal is to simply enjoy reading.

Book Club 2024

The Mystery Guest / Nita Prose

  • A new mess. A new mystery. It’s up to Molly the maid to uncover the truth, no matter how dirty.

Kitchen Confidential / Anthony Bourdain

  • Structured as a loose collection of humorous anecdotes, Kitchen Confidential is equal parts confessional narrative and industry commentary on the cooking trade. Bourdain has cited George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London (1933), with its behind-the-scenes examination of the restaurant business in 1920s Paris, as an important influence on the book's themes and tone.[5] He details some of his personal misdeeds and weaknesses, including drug use. He explains how restaurants function economically and warns consumers of the various tricks of restaurateurs. For example, he famously advises customers to avoid ordering fish on a Monday as it is likely left over from the weekend or earlier. He also suggests avoiding well-done beef, since cheaper cuts are often substituted for the top-quality meat used for rarer orders.
